Prepare properly

Preparation is paramount to ensure that the whole removal runs smoothly. To ensure this is the case it is important that, if you decide to pack all your own goods, you follow a few simple steps.

When assembling your boxes do not try to interlock them. This only weakens them. Fold the two smaller flaps over first followed by the two larger flaps. Apply tape across the box. The same steps apply when sealing the box. Write a short description on the top and where the box is to be placed.

As soon as possible before your move.

Fill in a change of address form from the Post Office.
Notify creditors, family, friends etc. of your new address.
Arrange for your phone to be turned off as late as possible at your present address on your moving day.
Arrange for your phone to be turned on at your new address on your moving day.
Notify doctors, dentists, schools about your move and enquire about new ones near your new address.
Arrange parking suspensions with the local authorities for the removal vans at your old and new address.

Make a plan of your new home and determine where your furniture will be put and where the boxes can be stacked out of the way.
Get your packing materials and start packing any non essential items.
Dispose of anything that is not needed any more (moving is a great time to de-clutter your home).

Arrange appointments with Sky, Cable operator, TV aerial installers etc. to give you a service at your new address.
Check your freezer. Start using the food that you can so that you have a minimal amount left by the day of your move.

Arrange for any appliances that you are taking (cooker, washing machine etc.), to be disconnected before or on the day of your move.

The week before your move.

Check all appointments that you have made (phone, appliances, Sky etc.) to make sure they are doing the work on the day you booked it.
Take down and wrap your paintings and pictures and put them all in one place.
Pack anything you are taking from your shed or loft.

Keep an open box aside to put medicines, paperwork and anything that you will need access to quickly.
Finish as much of the packing as you can.

The day before moving.

Defrost the fridge/freezer and dry them out.
Drain excess water from any plants that you are taking.
Keep aside as little as you need to keep you going for the day and overnight and pack the rest.

Anything that needs dismantling that you do not need overnight should be taken apart, unless the movers are doing it for you.
Have a good look around the house to see if you have missed anything.
